Yearbook Machine

Working at Yearbook Machine is a unique experience. We are unfussy about the small things — there’s no dress code, little bureacracy and a relaxed working environment. But we care deeply about the big things, like producing work of the highest quality and keeping our customers happy. It’s an approach that seems to have worked well: in just a few years and with a tiny team, we’ve grown to be the UK’s biggest provider of leavers’ yearbooks. We’re now looking to build on our success and are seeking talented and motivated individuals to help us get to the next level.

Want to help us re-imagine a tired, centuries-old industry as a modern online experience? At Yearbook Machine we've been working hard to build a service that makes creating a yearbook painless and, dare we say it, fun. We've built up a growing set of happy customers and have already bootstrapped the company to profitability. We're now looking to take our service to even more people and are seeking ambitious graduates to come and help us do it.

Your job will involve working on all aspects of our software and systems. This will include both backend and frontend web development, as well as some more exotic programming behind the scenes (don’t worry, we’ll train you on the job). As a software company with technical founders, we treat developers as first-class citizens, and your creativity and input will be rewarded. You’ll be using the latest technologies to build a system which produces a beautiful physical product cherished by thousands of young people every year.

Working at Yearbook Machine is not the corporate 9-5: we’re a small group of like-minded, focused individuals based in a bright and airy converted warehouse space in Shoreditch, London. We share our office with a design company and another web startup so there’s a great atmosphere, friendly people and always something going on. We care about what we do and are proud to make a product that our customers love. If this sounds like something you’d like to be a part of, please apply!

What you'll need
  • Ability to write clean and extensible PHP and MySQL code
  • Ability to write high-quality HTML, JavaScript and CSS
  • Basics of Linux/Unix command line tools
  • An appreciation of coding standards and design patterns
  • An eye for detail and appreciation of "beautiful" solutions to problems
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
What will help you to stand out
  • Experience with a framework (Symfony, Zend)
  • Knowledge of JavaScript libraries (jQuery, Prototype, Backbone)
  • TDD/BDD (PHPUnit, Cucumber/Behat)
  • Git
  • Systems administration / ‘DevOps’ (Nginx, Chef, Capistrano, Rake)
  • Knowing how NoSQL can fill a gap left by the limitations of an RDBMS
  • Ideas for how Google Glass might help our customers experience our product as an immersive experience
Package
  • £25-35k, depending on experience
  • Generous share options
  • Good working conditions, a comfortable chair and your choice of hardware
  • Breakfast and the occasional party

Marketing and Creative Internship (Paid)

Yearbook Machine is a creative technology company based in central London specialising in making systems that allow students to make yearbooks together online. We're currently a tiny team of 3 people and our customer base is growing rapidly, so we're looking to take on a full time paid intern during the 2013-2014 academic year to help us out.

We don't just want you to file stuff away and make tea (although tea-making skill is highly valued): you'll be a big part of our team and will have a real impact on what we do. Your main responsibilities will include improving the way we run our social media, creating marketing resources, conducting surveys and analysing research. There will also be a variety of individual projects coming up that you will be involved with, including video-making and research into expanding our operations internationally. The work will be varied and interesting, and you'll even have chances to get out of the office, travelling around the country to visit potential and current customers.

This is a great opportunity for the right candidate to get some crucial real-world work experience, earn some money and also to have some fun!

Job starts around August/September 2013. Length of internship: 3 months+ (flexible)

You'll need
  • To be over 18
  • To be great at social media
  • Excellent writing and IT skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Organisation, enthusiasm, creativity and a willingness to pitch in
For bonus points
  • Knowledge of HTML, CSS, WordPress
  • Some experience with InDesign, Photoshop
  • The ability to drive a big Yearbook Machine bus around the country(!)
Package
  • Competitive London wage
  • Breakfast and the occasional party

Senior / Lead Frontend Developer

Yearbook Machine is a fast-growing creative technology company based in central London. We've more than doubled our customer base every year for the past 5 years and are now the market leaders in the UK. But despite our success, we're still a tiny team of 3 people. We've got big plans for the next few years, including an international launch, and are looking for smart, driven and talented people to join our team and make things happen.

We build a social network that students use to create a personalised physical product. This system is well-liked and well-used: over 30% of our customers log in to it every day and we’ve been told that, for portions of the year, it becomes more popular on school and university networks than Facebook. But so far our frontend has mainly been made to be functional rather than exceptional, as we’ve been busy building the other parts of our technology. We're now looking for someone who can take responsibility for giving our user interfaces the love they need to delight our customers.

This role offers a rare opportunity to make a significant mark at a critical stage of growth in an exciting young company. With a wide variety of interesting and rewarding technical problems, you will have the satisfaction of making a system that allows thousands of young people to create a product that they love. If this sounds like something for you then please apply!

What you'll need
  • To be expert in JavaScript/HTML/CSS
  • Thorough understanding of jQuery and how to use it efficiently
  • Experience with 'MVC' Javascript frameworks such as Backbone and Ember
  • Working knowledge of PHP
  • Analytical approach to prioritising and solving interface problems
  • Informed opinions on how to grow a sustainable frontend code base
  • Experience maintaining a consistent visual identity
What will help you stand out
  • Demonstrable experience working with large and complex systems
  • Experience of A/B and multivariate testing
  • BDD (Cucumber/Behat)
  • Good taste in web design
Package
  • £40-55k, depending on experience
  • Generous share options
  • Good working conditions, a comfortable chair and your choice of hardware
  • Breakfast and the occasional party
